Burgas

Burgas is the largest town in southeastern Bulgaria and the fourth most populous in the country. It is the most important economic, transport, administrative and cultural center in southeastern Bulgaria. The town is an administrative center of the homonymous municipality and district and the seat of regional and national institutions.

Port of Bourgas, with its 33 berths with a maximum draft of 15.5 meters, is the largest port in Bulgaria. Burgas International Airport has the greatest number of sunny days in Europe and today it has the third longest runway (3200 m) on the Balkan Peninsula (after the expansion of the airports in Sofia and Athens). The airport has good connections for intermodal transportation by land and sea in Bulgaria and worldwide. The tracks are suitable for all types of aircrafts used in the civil and military aviation. The airport operates around the clock in an average year, accounting for only 3 days with visibility less than 1 km.

The location among several nature reserves and protected areas, ancient and medieval villages, the Black Sea and the annual festivals attract many tourists. The town offers excellent conditions for sunbathing. Burgas city beach is divided into three coastlines. The central beach is located in the central part along the Sea Garden. It is divided into north and south. The North part of Burgas beach is characterized by dark black sands, and its South part by fine white sand. There are other beaches in Sarafovo and Kraimorie.

Burgas as a university and cultural center has two universities: the University "Asen Zlatarov" (it includes three autonomous colleges: College of Tourism, Technical and Medical College) and Burgas Free University established in 1991. The town has numerous museums - Historical, Ethnographic, Archaeological, Natural. Burgas has drama, children's and puppet theater, opera, concert hall and many art galleries. The seaside town is one of the few towns in Bulgaria which has a theater for drama, opera and ballet (Burgas Opera).

Among the town’s attractions are the cathedral church "Saints Cyril and Methodius" and the church "Assumption" - the oldest churches in the town, also the Orthodox Church "St. Ivan Rilski" and the first Armenian Apostolic Church built by the Armenian community with support of local Bulgarians, as well as the models of the early 20th and late 19th century stored in the central part of the town.

Burgas has two large stadiums, a cycling track, a go-kart track, eight operating swimming pools and many sports facilities and halls, some of which are the most modern ones in Bulgaria.

There are many parks and green areas in the town. The Sea Garden is the lung of the town and a monument of national importance. It is one of the largest parks in the town and was founded with the first development plan of Burgas back in 1891. The Sea Garden stretches along the beach, it is about 5 km long and covers an area of about 600 acres. From the garden opens wide view to the Burgas bay, to Pomorie in the northern part of the bay, and Sozopol and the northern foot of the Strandzha Mountains in the southern part of the bay. The Sea Casino, the local Summer theater with retractable roof and the air stage called the "Snail" are constructed here. Many events take place here in the summer, such as the International Folk Festival, Jazz Festival, opera and theater performances, concerts of pop and rock artists. Every year at the end of April there is a National Exhibition of Flowers with international participation called "Flora Burgas". For the past several years, the town has also become famous for its annual international music festival "Spirit of Burgas".
