Ahtopol

The town of Ahtopol is situated on a rocky peninsula on the Black Sea coast and at the foot of Strandzha Mountain. It is located 14 km south of Tsarevo and 5 km north of the mouth of Veleka river. The town is a part of "Strandzha" Natural Park. Among the local attractions are the church "Ascension" built in 1776, remains of the monastery "St. Yani" from the 12th century, parts of the town wall (in places reaching 8 m in height and 3,5 m in width). There is a historical museum here as well. Near the peninsula are the remains of a Thracian wall. Nearby is also the beach to the protected area "Silistar." The area is coastal, wetland preserved with typical dense forest. There are rare and protected nesting birds on the dunes and rocks around Silistar.
