Obzor

Obzor is a town in southeastern Bulgaria. It is situated in Nessebar Municipality, Burgas District and is close to the town of Byala. Obzor has one of the longest beaches in Bulgaria - 8 km. The town's history dates since more than three thousand years ago. First the Thracians established their settlement Navlahos. In the first millennium BC the town of Heliopolis (city of the sun)was founded by Greek settlers. After its conquest by the Romans in the first century BC a temple of Jupiter was built, and the city gets the name of Teopolis (City of God) or Tempul Yovis (City of Jupiter) - remnants of this temple have been preserved in the city center. Later the place was a summer residence of the Byzantine emperors. After a while the Bulgarian fortress Kozyak was built here. At the time of the Ottoman Empire the settlement Gyozeken ("overview" in Turkish) was found on this territory. The town bears its present name since 1936. Obzor was officialy proclaimed a town on 9 September 1984.
