Nessebar

Nessebar is a town in southeastern Bulgaria, partly situated on a picturesque peninsula in the Black Sea. It is located adjacent to the north with the biggest Bulgarian Black Sea resort Sunny Beach and to the south it borders the town of Pomorie. The town is the administrative center of the municipality of Nessebar. Just next to Nessebar are located the resorts of Sunny Beach, Saint Vlas and Ravda all sharing a long unbroken coastline.

The peninsula of Nessebar - the ancient city called Messambria, named Messemvria in the Late Middle Ages and later Nessebar, was inhabited thousands of years ago in the late Bronze Age. Old Thracians called it "Melsambria" which means "city of Melsa", the legendary founder of the settlement. Messambria has two convenient ports - south and north, where even today there are many remains of ancient vessels.

All ancient buildings in the peninsula are preserved. The main entrance is also preserved, as well as some parts of the wall of the fortress which defended the town from raids over the centuries.

The cultural heritage of Nessebar is preserved in five museum exhibitions. In the old town there used to be about 42 churches, of which less than half were found by archaeologists and preserved, and one of them is currently operational. Among them are the ruins of the 4th century church "St. Sofia", the churches "Virgin Eleousa" from the 6th century, "St. Stephen" from the 10th century, "Saint John the Baptist " and "St. Dimitar" from the 11th century, "St. Archangels Michael and Gabriel "and" St. Paraskeva "from the 13th century, and others. The more conserved ones were turned into art galleries. The isthmus connecting the old with the new parts of the toen is 400 m long. At its center lies the old mill of the town which is a tourist attraction. In Nessebar is located landmark № 7 – one of the hundred tourist sites of the Bulgarian Tourist Union – an Architectural-Historical reserve with Archaeological Museum, and Museum "Old Nessebar."
