Sozopol

Sozopol is the oldest town on the Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The earliest settlement in the area occurred in the late 5th century BC. The town is located in the southern part of the Bourgas Bay, 35 km south of Burgas. The city is divided into Old and New Town, as the Sea Garden lies between the two. The old town is situated on the small peninsula Skamniy jutting out between Sozopol bay and Korenyata bay. Skamniy is connected by an artificial mound and breakwater with the island of St Kirik located 250 meters northwest of Sozopol on an area of 80 acres. Along the bay on the peninsula Korenyata and next to Budzhaka peninsula is the newest part of the town  - Harmanite area. Budzhaka Peninsula and Kavatsi Bay mark the southern boundary of the town.

Tourism is a key economic feature in the most recent history of Sozopol. The town and the municipality are a major destinations on the southern Bulgarian Black Sea coast. The coastline is notable for its great discernment and great beaches within the town  - the Central or North Beach and Harmanite. Nearly one-third of the beach is occupied by sand dunes. The peninsula between the bays have noses difficult to access and a lot of underwater and surface rocks. Near the town there are several camping sites: “Gradina” /"Garden"/, “Zlatna ribka” /"Goldfish"/, "Kavatsi", "Veselie" /”Fun”/and “Smokinya”/"Fig"/. The first two and the last three have common coastline which is one of the largest nudist beaches in Bulgaria.

The old town is famous for its ancient architecture, museums, art galleries, archaeological sites and offers many forms of cultural activity. Annual festivals are held here, namely "Sozopolis", "Sozopol Fest - July Morning", Festival of Arts "Apollonia".

Among the local attractions are distinguished the historical monuments and the Architectural Archaeological Reserve "Ancient Sozopol", the Thracian fortresses and burial mounds near “Medni Rid” /Copper Ridge/, the famous ancient necropolis of ancient Apollonia Pontica - those in the Sea Garden and the localities of Harmanite and Budzhaka. Ancient Sozopol is surrounded by a medieval fortress of walls and towers, built during the reign of Anastasius, around year 511. Some fragments are preserved from the fortress, reaching a height of 3-4 meters. Since 2003, the walls have been reconstructed, preserved and promoted segments of the South wall and watchtower.
