Balchik
Balchik is a small coastal town in Dobrich District, northeastern Bulgaria, situated in the middle of the northern Bulgarian Black Sea coast near the resorts Albena, Kranevo, Golden Sands, Varna, Dobrich, and Kavarna. It is an administrative municipal center. At the time of the ancient colonization of the Black Sea the town was called Dionysopolis. In late antiquity and early Middle Ages the fortress Krouni was erected there which used to defend the coast from invasion by sea. The Bulgarian settlement is the fortress Karvuna, capital of Dobrudzha along with nearby Cape Kaliakra. After the Ottoman conquest the town was known by its present name.
The town develops mainly tourist activity during the summer. A serious obstacle to the development of this sector is the lack of a sandy beach area. Nevertheless, the town is characterized by interesting local attractions, as the main one is the architectural park complex "Balchik Palace" - built in 1924 as a summer residence of the Romanian Queen Mary, and the Botanical garden created here after the Liberation with its second largest cactus collection in Europe (after the one in Monaco), and other unique plants. Other sights include the Historic Museum, the Hellenistic Temple of Mother Goddess – Cybele, the Art Gallery of Balchik, the Renaissance complex, the Ethnographic Museum and several churches, including Memorial Temple "St. Nicholas", "St. Martyr. George the conqueror ", " St. Equal to the apostles St. Konstantin and Elena", the Chapel" St. Assumption "," St. Reverend Paraskeva - Petka Tarnovska" Chapel.
The town is a center of many cultural events. Every year many festivals are held here. The child festival Smiles of the Sea has become a tradition. Several festivals tend to become annual festivals, and these are: Balfest - International Film Festival for documentary, and the International Film Forum.
